Murfreesboro businessman Shane Reeves won the Republican nomination for the special election to fill the empty seat in the 14th district of the Tennessee State Senate with nearly two-thirds of the vote.

Reeves received 4,720 votes to challenger Joe Carr's 2,556 votes. That's 64.87 percent to 35.13 percent, according to the Tennessee Secretary of State's accounting of Thursday's primary.

Democrat Gayle Jordan, who is running unopposed received 574 votes, proving there are a few Democrats left in Tennessee.

When looking at the county level results, Reeves won each handly. The closest race was in Moore County where the margin was 51.83 percent to 48.17 percent out of 301 votes. (See chart at the end of the article.)

Reeves and Jordan will face off March 13 for the general election. Early voting runs from Feb. 21-March 8. Tuesday, March 6 is the absentee request deadline for general election.

Reeves is known for his role running in Reeves-Sain Drugstore and now TwelveStone Medical Partners. His father Richard Reeves served as Murfreesboro mayor for one term from 1998-2002.

Jordan describes herself on her website as “a mother, a grandmother, and a concerned citizen.” She lives on a small farm in northern Rutherford County where she raised four children, along with longhorn cattle, goats, donkeys and chickens.

Jordan also recently made news by endorsing medical marijuana to The Murfreesboro Post. 

Reeves and Jordan are seeking to fill the seat vacated by Former state Sen. Jim Tracy who in November gave up a leadership position in the Tennessee General Assembly for a political appointment to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
