Rutherford County Schools holds meeting addressing safety

In a meeting about school safety held Monday, May, 7, School Board Chairman Jeff Jordan said the district will apply for a federal grant to help boost school security, The Murfreesboro Post reported.

Jordan said 143 districts from across the nation are vying for a slice of $25 million in federal cash to be awarded for the 2018-19 school year. The money can be used to implement a training program with local law enforcement based on school safety.

RCS already has a robust school security program in its partnership with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

The RCSO provides school resource officers. Rutherford County was a test district in 1993 for the SRO concept, which was championed by former sheriff Truman Jones. The program was expanded in 2013 after Sandy Hook to place an SRO in each elementary and middle school with two in each high school.
