SMYRNA, TN — A Smyrna man remains in custody following his arrest in a child rape investigation.

Wilmer Umanzor-Bonilla, 48, remains jailed at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center following his arrest by Smyrna Police in connection to an ongoing child rape investigation.

According to some of the details surrounding case information, Umanzor-Bonilla was taken into custody by a Smyrna detective after a two-year investigation that began in 2023. The charges stem from an incident reported to have occurred on August 1, 2021.

Umanzor-Bonilla faces two counts of Aggravated Rape of a Child, a Class A felony under Tennessee law (T.C.A. § 39-13-531). The statute applies to cases involving alleged unlawful sexual penetration of a child under the age of eight. A conviction, should one occur in this case,  carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years without parole and lifetime sex offender registration.

Court documents show that Umanzor-Bonilla’s current residence is listed as a mobile home park on Naylor Avenue in Murfreesboro. However, he is currently being held at the county detention center.

The case is being handled in Rutherford County Circuit Court. A continuance was granted this past April, and the next scheduled court proceeding is a status hearing set for August 7, 2025, at 9 a.m. before Judge Barry Tidwell.

Authorities have not released additional details due to the nature of the charges and that a juvenile is reportedly the victim in the case, which again, is still ongoing in the judicial process.

The next upcoming event within our local courts is a status hearing on Augut 7, 2025.
