News of the Week: Are Mount Trashmore's days numbered?

Apr 19, 2018 at 02:07 pm by Michelle Willard

The owners of Middle Point Landfill were denied a request to expand the privately owned operation onto an adjacent parcel, according to The Daily News Journal

The landfill, which is rumored to be the tallest man-made structure in Rutherford County and was referred to as the "largest pile of trash in the state" by the opposition, already occupies 400 acres in Walter Hill. Called Middle Point 2.0, the expansion would have added another 288 acres off Jefferson Pike to the mountain of trash and another 15 years to its lifespan.

Now it is estimated to be full in eight to 12 years.

For some reason, Commissioner Will Jordan equated expanding the landfill to "socialism." Who knows what he meant by that, but it worked. The County Commission voted 21-0 to deny the Middle Point 2.0.

RCS approves draft contract for Spurlock

The Rutherford County School Board is still split on its future director Bill Spurlock.

The vote to confirm him was 5-2 and now the vote to finalize his contract has the same two board members questioning it, according to the Murfreesboro Post

Board Member Lisa Moore abstained from the vote after asking Board Attorney Jeff Reed why the contract offer was for $156,316.

Reed responded that number was outgoing director Don Odom's salary so he kept it for consistency and, in fact, Odom was underpaid considering the size of the district (fourth largest in the state) and when compared to other superintendents in Middle Tennessee (lowest paid in the region). Thank you very much.

Aaron Holladay voted no on the contract, staying consistent on his disapproval of Spurlock in general.

Former RuCo judge drops $1.3M on congressional campaign

Former Rutherford County Chancellor Bob Corlew has loaned his campaign for the 6th Congressional District a whopping $1.3 million, reported Tom Humphrey of the TN Journal.

Corlew's required Federal Election Commission financial disclosure for the first quarter of 2018 puts him in the lead for cash on hand in the Republican primary. Corlew is competing with John Rose and Judd Matheny for the district that is currently represented by Diane Black and does not cover any of Rutherford County.

According to the FEC report, Corlew has spent about $240,000 and has a little over $1 million cash on hand. He also reported "no contributions from corporate PACs."

Corlew is known to the Rutherford County community through his tenure as Tennessee General Sessions Court judge from 1984-1990 and chancellor from 1990-2014.
