Bizarre in the Boro: Neighbors come to blows over parking space

On Saturday night, Feb. 3, Murfreesboro Police were called to break up a fight between neighbors over two parking spots at an apartment complex off Fortress Boulevard.

When MPD officers arrived around 11:30 p.m., all the punches had been thrown but the fighters were still yelling at each across the parking lot.

The anger stemmed from a disagreement between a married couple and their neighbors over parking, according to an incident report.

The couple came home and found their spots occupied by a Nissan sedan and another car, which were driven by people visiting their neighbors.

"(The husband) asked them to move and they did; however they didn't move them fast enough," the report said.

Being not so neighborly, the wife called a tow truck and pulled her car behind the parking spaces to keep the cars in place until the tow truck arrived.

One of the drivers "was nice and apologized" for taking the spaces and the wife relented, letting his car out. But she remained behind the Nissan, which didn't sit well with the driver.

"He began slowly pulling out and honking his horn. He almost struck (the wife's) vehicle," the report said.

This is where things turned south.

The wife pulled into the empty spot, jumped from her car and started hitting the Nissan. The Nissan driver got out and, according to her husband, pushed the wife (according to other witnesses, the driver just yelled at her).

The husband used the car door to separate the Nissan driver and the wife. So the driver punched the husband in the nose.

The parties stepped back at this point and continued yelling with the white wife reportedly yelling racial slurs at her black neighbors. One the neighbor's said "oh hell no" and punched the wife in the face.

"A tussle ensued" and the wife fell to the ground, scuffing her knees, the report said. Someone pulled the two women apart as the police arrived.

It took police an hour (along with nine pages of a police report) to figure out what had happened and calm the subjects down enough to talk to each other.

The husband and wife were the only ones to receive injuries from the fight. They refused medical attention.

No one was arrested as it seemed everyone was at fault.

Where did all the mattresses go?

A local furniture store reported Feb. 2 that at least 19 mattresses, valued at more than $3,500, were stolen from its warehouse.

The store's manager said he thought the mattresses were taken sometime between Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. After discovering the theft, he looked online and found a few of the mattresses listed on Craigslist at an address in the county.

An inventory found two twin mattresses, three full mattresses, 11 queen mattresses and three king mattresses were missing.

Because the stolen merchandise is in the county, the case was transferred to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.
