News of the Week: Local police officers under scrutiny in Murfreesboro

Jul 26, 2018 at 01:00 pm by Michelle Willard

A former MTSU police officer was subjected to a probable cause hearing and a Sheriff's detective was fired in the past week.

On Monday, July 23, WKRN's Larry Flowers reported on MTPD Officer Marco Burke who stands accused of theft from the department.

Flowers reported that Burke's body camera went mysteriously dark during an incident in June when $1,100 and two bottles of narcotics turned up missing. Burke failed to report the pills and cash were confiscated.

The reckless driver call for service turned out to be a sting coordinated by MTPD. The department was investigating the theft of an AR-15 from the MTPD locker room. Investigators believe Burke may have taken the rifle.

After the hearing Monday, Judge Ben Hall McFarlin ruled there was enough evidence to present the case to the Rutherford County Grand Jury in August.

On Friday, July 20, Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh confirmed he fired Lt. Jason Mathis after the officer was suspended pending a TBI investigation, The Daily News Journal reported.

Information is scant in this case. Fitzhugh declined to comment and the TBI has its lips sealed in ongoing investigations.

TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland did say the agency was asked to investigate Mathis by the District Attorney's Office.

Beer sales are closer to reality at MTSU

Beers sales are closer to being allowed at certain MTSU games, according to The Murfreesboro Post

At its Thursday, July 19 meeting, the Murfreesboro City Council adopted an updated beer ordinance that does a few things, like allow for MTSU's bee vendor to apply for permits at "certain sporting events."

The update comes after the Tennessee General Assembly passed a law that permits beer and wine sales at football, basketball and soccer games at MTSU and TSU.
