Committee pondering future of landfill today

Feb 27, 2018 at 01:33 pm by Voice Wire

The Rutherford County Solid Waste/Advisory Steering Council will meet at 5 p.m. today (Feb. 27) in the County Commission chamber. They will meet in the Rutherford County Commission chamber, on the second floor of the County Courthouse, One Public Square, Murfreesboro. The public is invited to attend.

They will focus on specific options for solid waste – how to handle it and how to manage the process – as the current system approaches capacity.

Currently, Rutherford County taxpayers have free use of the Middle Point landfill – worth at least $4 million annually – and the county receives approximately $900,000 a year from other counties that use Middle Point. Any solution will bring increased costs.

The committee includes representatives from Rutherford County government as well as the cities of Murfreesboro, Smyrna, LaVergne, and Eagleville.
