Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department reminds that chimneys should be cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional after responding to a house fire just before 8 o'clock Friday night.

District 7 and Ladder 6 were the first to arrive and discovered a heavy fire in the chimney of the two-story homeat 2930 Cherry Blossom Lane. Fortunately, all residents were out safely prior to MFRD arrival.

Acting Battalion Chief Terry Smith said Ladder 7 and Rescue 7’s crews quickly made entry to the structure and were able to get the fire in the chimney knocked down. Ladder 8 and Engine 4 were called to the scene to provide manpower.

Firefighters then found that the fire had made its way into the attic and flames were coming through the roof. Smith said the fireplace, chimney, and chase all received extensive damage, as well as a large portion of the second floor due to trying to gain access to the fire in the attic.

Crews remained at the scene conducting salvage and overhaul in an effort to protect items on the first floor.

It is unknown at this time what caused the fire, but it appears to have started in the chimney before spreading to other structural components. Smith said the Fire Marshal’s Office will be called to conduct an investigation.

A total of five residents (two adults and three children) were displaced but did not require assistance from the American Red Cross.

When asked about the obstacles firefighters faced in the cold temperatures, Smith said the scene was definitely slippery due to the ice, but it did not slow operations.

More information will be released on the fire as it becomes available.
