For the first time, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens in Nashville will be selecting the Cheekwood Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence (AIR) 2021 artist via an open application process.
Eligible artists interested in the four-week residency at the acclaimed historic estate, 55-acre botanical garden and art museum must submit a letter of intent, artist statement, CV and portfolio consisting of 15-20 most recent and representative works to Hannah Morgan at email@example.com no later than midnight Oct. 30, 2021. The recipient will be selected on November 30, 2021.
The AIR series is an initiative focused on bringing innovative, dynamic and intriguing artists to the city of Nashville for a coveted opportunity to produce an interpretive site-specific exhibition at one of the city’s leading art institutions. Through the open call, Cheekwood invites US-based artists with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree to create on the estate for a full month and presents them an opportunity to display their works in an indoor and/or outdoor exhibition.
The 2021 AIR artist will consider how paper has historically and currently been used in celebration of artistic expression through the employment of an infinite number of mediums. Artists are expected to create onsite for their four-week residency in response to the Cheekwood environment. Throughout the residency, the artists will be offered an environment or studio space in which they are able to work. All artist materials will be provided, and artists are expected to interact with the public and partake in scheduled educational programming. Works produced will be installed with the assistance of the Cheekwood curatorial staff. Additionally, the AIR artist will receive an honorarium, housing and meals, and all travel costs for the residency will be covered.
