A group of Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department firefighters, deployed to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, is returning home after being told the task force team was not needed.

"We didn't hesitate to provide personnel when called upon," MFRD Chief Mark Foulks said. "Our firefighters are trained and among the best in the state and country and are ready to do whatever they are asked to do."

MFRD Captain Brian Burgess, Captain Gary Hutchinson, and Firefighter Justin Anderson, part of the Tennessee Task Force 2 group, were notified of the cancelation after arriving in Mississippi.  The task force was informed that the storm moved out quicker than expected, and the storm surge was not as high as predicted.

The MFRD firefighters arrived in Murfreesboro around 10:00 p.m. Thursday.

The firefighters were to join a team of others traveling to Louisiana.

The crew was to stage in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and assist with search and rescue, and possibly swift water rescue in areas impacted by the hurricane.

Tennessee Task Force 2 members were expected to be deployed for two weeks.

MFRD Firefighter Sean Wheeler, Firefighter Matt Tidwell, and Driver/Engineer Justin Lewis were on stand-by as alternates. They were not needed and returned to Murfreesboro.
