UPDATED: Arrest made in 1 of 2 unrelated shootings Thursday night

Murfreesboro officers at a possible road rage shooting Thursday, July 9 on NE Broad Street.

Murfreesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Division detectives have arrested the person who shot and killed a Murfreesboro man Thursday evening, July 9.

The suspect, Zolan Miles, 21, turned himself in at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office shortly after the shooting.  He was interviewed by MPD detectives and charged with second-degree murder.

The victim, Rodney Armstrong, 29, was shot twice in the backyard of his Maylon Drive home around 7:47 p.m. Medics transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation reveals Armstrong had a disagreement with Miles before being shot. There was a group of five others who witnessed the shooting and then took off running.

Miles remains in jail at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $450,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Rutherford County General Sessions Court on October 5.

EARLIER

A Murfreesboro man was killed in one of two related shooting Thursday night, according to Murfreesboro Police Department spokesman Larry Flowers.

Around 7:45 p.m., MPD officers were dispatched to Maylon Drive. One male victim had been shot and was taken to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital after an altercation with a group of people in the backyard of a home.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital and police are still looking for the suspect who left the scene.

At the same time, MPD officers responded to a shooting in the 1500 block of NE Broad Street.

One person shot in leg, taken to the hospital in a possible road rage incident.

The suspect vehicle is a blue Dodge Ram four-door with a West Virginia license plate (pictured below).
