One driver putting on makeup and speeding at 82 mph received a citation from a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper last Friday on Interstate 24.

Several drivers texting while driving earned tickets.

A man drag racing while driving on a suspended license was arrested while the other driver received a citation from a THP sergeant.

Those were just some of the drivers discovered by THP troopers, Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies and Murfreesboro and Smyrna Police during “Operation Incognito” April 12 throughout the county.

THP troopers and deputies concentrated on I-24 while Murfreesboro and Smyrna Police worked in their cities.

The operation was conducted during National Work Zone Awareness and Distracted Driving Awareness Week April 8-15.

Several troopers and a Tennessee Highway Safety Office liaison rode in an unmarked van spotting driver’s texting while they drove on I-24 from Joe B. Jackson Parkway to La Vergne.

Tennessee Department of Transportation driver Mark Smith stopped his help truck behind the officers to warn drivers to move over to protect the drivers and officers.

THP Sgt. Scott Miller said the team of officers issued 34 citations including:

  • 34 drivers texting and driving.
  • 109 drivers not wearing seat belts.
  • 42 drivers who failed to move over for emergency workers.
  • 43 other violations.

Smyrna Police arrested one driver for DUI and two drivers for using a phone in a school zone.
