Opinion: Why is AOC protected territory in the media?

Why Aren't Any Comedians Making Fun Of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?

My readers know I don't miss a good opportunity to point out media hypocrisy. Ocasio-Cortez or AOC is the darling of the anti-Trump media, millennial poster-girl, so she's a sacred cow. You may remember Barack Obama was never lampooned by comedians because to do so would have risked certain charges of racism. However, in order to protect the notion that all women are loyal to liberal causes, Sarah Palin had to be discredited at any cost.

Since Ocasio-Cortez burst forth as the Democrats' mascot, she has been a near non-stop gaffe machine. She has opined on such issues as "the three chambers of Congress" and declared, "Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs."

Ocasio-Cortez recently tweeted: "$21 TRILLION of Pentagon financial transactions 'could not be traced, documented, or explained.' $21T in Pentagon accounting errors. Medicare for All costs ~$32T. That means 66% of Medicare for All could have been funded already by the Pentagon. And that's before our premiums."

Actually, the Defense Department hasn't received $21 trillion in appropriations over all of American history. However, liberals deal in feelings much more than facts.

Fox News' Brit Hume dared compare AOC to former 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

He suggested that were Ocasio-Cortez a Republican versus a Democrat, the left would be treating her the exact same way they treated Palin, who was mocked mercilessly over everything she said and did.

"If Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) were a conservative, all anyone would be talking about is how uninformed she is," Marc Thiessen noted in his piece for The Washington Post.

"She would be facing trick questions from reporters designed to expose her lack of knowledge, and brutal sketches on 'Saturday Night Live' mocking her intelligence and fitness for office."

Instead, she's being heralded as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

So, where are America's funny people? A million lazy jokes about Donald Trump and not a single witticism left in the chamber?

SNL made a living off lampooning Gerald Ford and both Bushes while Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel do the same with Donald Trump. Why Trump has resurrected the flagging career of Alec Baldwin, but you don't see equal joking at the left's expense.

AOC should be goldmine for the comedians of SNL, HBO, and Comedy Central, but for now-crickets.

I ask you what's the difference between Ocasio-Cortez's gaffes and Sarah Palin's? The answer is the snowflake media's political correctness. Socialism's just "so hot right now."

AOC is such a star right now a CBS news headline from Wednesday read, "Ocasio-Cortez shared her skincare regimen" on Instagram, where she has 2.1 million followers.

AOC is treated as a joke by many conservatives, and some criticisms are deserved, her vacation prior to taking office or defense for lack of a district office based on the government shutdown. Politically though, it would be a grave mistake to treat her and her status quo-breaking generation as a joke. Her proposed "Green New Deal" and 70 percent marginal income tax rate must be opposed on their merits, not flippantly dismissed.

AOC is a product of her time and place, so much of the criticism of her tweeting, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube activity amounts to criticism of all millennials. So conservatives, set fact checking aside and start educating millennial Americans on the dangers of socialism.

Maybe a closer look at the current horror that is Venezuela is in order: a teaser for my next column.
