MT Soccer: Overtime goal gives MT win over Rice

HOUSTON, Tex. - In the second overtime period, Middle Tennessee's (6-2-1) Peyton DePriest hustled after a loose ball and drove a shot past the goalkeeper to lead the Blue Raiders past Rice (2-5-0) by a score of 3-2.

Prior to that, the teams had been tied since the 66th minute when Rice found an equalizer just 5 minutes after DePriest gave MT its first lead of the game.

This is the first overtime win in the 2018 season for the Blue Raiders and their first since October 1st of 2017 when DePriest also had the game-winner over FIU.

Match Moments

11' - GOAL (Rice) - Rice's Lianne Manaquil played a ball right in front of the box and Marissa Topolski drove it right into the net to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead.

27' - CHANCE (MT) - The Blue Raiders were in a similar situation as Peyton DePriest found Hannah Tillett in front of the box. Tillett tried for the far side of the net but the ball went off the post.

48' - GOAL (MT) - Peyton DePriest beats an Owl to the ball and passes across the box to Hannah Tillett, who shoots it just over the keeper.

51' - SAVE (MT) - The Owls were awarded a set piece from about 20 yards out. They were able to put a shot on goal, but Celeste Barnard was there to make the catch and save.

53' - CHANCE (MT) - DePriest led another Blue Raider attack and made a similar pass to the one that got Tillett a goal. Sam DeBien was on the other end of this one, but her shot trailed just past the far post.

59' - SAVE (MT) - An Owl gets through on a breakaway with just the keeper to beat, but Barnard somehow makes a stop while falling backward.

62' - GOAL (MT) - DePriest led the attack down the left wing and sent a ball into the box. It bounced off a Rice defender and into the net to give MT a 2-1 lead.

66' - GOAL (Rice) - A shot in the box was stopped by the MT defense, but the rebound was left up for grabs and Caleigh Boeckx gathered it and scored the equalizing goal.

73' - CHANCE (MT) - DeBien directed a shot from the right wing towards the goal, but it was blocked. She hustled after the rebound and got another shot, but it sailed high of the crossbar.

79' - CHANCE (MT) - Amber Whitley received a cross from the left corner and got her head on it, but wasn't able to direct the header on goal as the ball went wide of the post.

85' - CHANCE (Rice) - A cross was directed in the center of the box and Annie Walker was able to get a shot off. Barnard managed to get in front of it to keep the score knotted at two.

88' - SAVE (Rice) - Annica Fletemeyer gathered a great pass in front of the goal and blasted it on goal, but Rice's keeper collected it for the save.

99' - SAVE (Rice) - Carolin Engelhard took a shot from a set piece just past midfield. Rice's keeper was able to field it and make the save.

101' - CHANCE (Rice) - The Owls got a couple of shots from inside the six yard box off a corner kick, but Barnard denied both of them.

104' - GOAL (MT) - Peyton DePriest finds herself all alone off a goal kick and slides the shot past the keeper for a game winner.

Middle Tennessee returns home on Sunday, September 23, as the Blue Raiders will host North Texas at Dean A. Hayes Soccer and Track stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
