Quickly locating a suspect accused of first-degree murder earned a sheriff’s corporal honors as Officer of the Month in June from Ford of Murfreesboro.

Cpl. Stephen Lewis heard dispatchers ask deputies to watch out for the suspect accused of killing a victim June 22 at a Smyrna bar.

Lewis obtained the suspect’s address and waited for him to return home. Lewis, other deputies and Murfreesboro Police took the suspect into custody.

General Manager Jason Borowski of Ford of Murfreesboro presented Lewis with a watch to recognize him as Officer of the Month.

“Cpl. Lewis’s actions exemplify courage, dedication and going the extra mile to keep our county safe,” Borowski said. “We are proud to have an officer like Lewis in our county’s sheriff’s office.”

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh said Lewis saw the suspect arrive. He approached the suspect who didn’t want to talk and retreated into his home.

Sheriff’s deputies and Murfreesboro Police arrived as back up and took the suspect into custody.

“I commend Cpl. Lewis for his initiative to watch for the suspect near his home,” Fitzhugh said. “His actions allowed the suspect to be arrested quickly and safely. I am proud of Cpl. Lewis’ dedication to his job.”

Sgt. Brandon Cisek reported Lewis tried to talk to the suspect who refused. Lewis called for backup deputies. Officers notified Smyrna Police who took over the investigation.

“Cpl. Lewis should be commended for his commitment to this department, his community and being extra vigilant in his efforts during this incident,” Cisek said.
