Murfreesboro records third murder in past week

The suspect in the death of a 45-year-old Murfreesboro man was quickly apprehended Saturday afternoon, May 19, according to a news release from the Murfreesboro Police Department.

After 1 p.m. May 19, MPD officers responded to a call of a shooting at 532 Reid Alley.

Upon arrival patrol officers found a male shooting victim, identified as Medrick Lamont Elliot of Murfreesboro, unresponsive outside the residence.

Elliot was treated on scene by members of the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and transported to Saint Thomas Rutherford by Rutherford County Emergency Services where he was pronounced deceased.

The suspect was on scene and was taken into custody by uniform patrol officers and was later interviewed by detectives. During the interview, the suspect, Nathaniel Lamont Buchanan, 32, made statements that he shot the victim during a dispute that had turned physical, the release said.

A gun was recovered at the scene near the suspect who was inside the residence when he was taken into custody, according to MPD.

Buchanan has been charged with First Degree Murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He is currently at the Rutherford County Adult Detention center being held without bond.
