Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center will celebrate the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage with an educational forum, set for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.

The free forum will be by Kory Wells, the 2018-19 Murfreesboro Cultural Arts Poet Laureate. The forum will be an open discussion along with artists displaying art.

The women's suffrage movement was the struggle for the right of women to vote and run for office and is part of the overall women's rights movement. Tennessee became the last battleground state for ratification. It was the pivotal 36th state to vote yes for the 19th Amendment. Tennessee's vote came on Aug. 18, 1920. On Nov. 2, that same year, more than 8 million women in the U.S. voted in elections for the first time.

In 1920, women's right to vote was achieved through the national and local efforts of the National Woman Suffrage Association. Suffrage for women was fought for and won by courageous women like Alice Stokes Paul, Anne Dallas Dudley, Harriot Stanton Blatch, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul and others.
