Are you searching for a way to get rid of vaping devices and its cartridges or unused opioids and medications?

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office will collect the vaping devices and unwanted medicines and prescriptions for free from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Sheriff's Office at 940 New Salem Highway, said Sgt. Robert Dowell.

This event is part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

"We will take medications, except liquids, that are expired and unused," Dowell said.   

People may simply drive up and drop off the medicines anonymously.

Deputy Chris Beach and Deputy Michael Hoffman will collect the vaping devices and medicines, but not liquids, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 26 outside the main entrance of St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital at 1700 Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro.

The collection site at the hospital is sponsored by the Prevention Coalition for Success.

For the first year, the Sheriff's Office will join the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and its partners to collect the vaping devices but cannot accept the devices with lithium ion batteries. DEA suggests people consult with stores that recycle lithium ion batteries for the disposal.

Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon of the DEA said the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative helps get unused and unwanted prescription medications out of circulation and ensures their safe disposal.

 "This year, we are taking a step further by accepting vaping devices and cartridges as we work with our federal partners to combat this emerging public health threat to the nation's youth," Dhillon said.

DEA reported concerns have been raised across the United States over illnesses and death caused by vaping and the high youth vaping initiation rates. In an effort to support a healthy lifestyle and energetic population, especially among America's youth, DEA is committed to doing all it can to help safely dispose of vaping devices and substances. 

A bin to collect unused medications is located at the front entrance of the Sheriff's Office lobby where pills can be dropped off anytime.  No liquids or needles are accepted.
