Interstate 24 reopened after it was closed in both directions Thursday morning near Almaville Road because of a tractor-trailer crash.

The crash occurred around 8 a.m. Thursday when a tractor-trailer crashed into the tree line between the Almaville Road exit and the Baker Road overpass on I-24 eastbound. 

The cab of the truck caught fire and the driver died in the blaze. 

As a precaution, first responders closed the interstate in both directions because it was believed the tanker may have been carrying gasoline or another hazardous substance.

"The social media attention from the crash got the attention of the freight line (Dana Transport Co.) owner and he shared that the tanker had offloaded polyoil in Ashland City earlier in the day," said Lisa Sloan, public information officer for Rutherford County Fire Rescue.

Once the contents were deemed non-hazardous, crews were able to extinguish the fire and the road was reopened.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. 

Traffic was being diverted eastbound at Almaville Road and Sam Ridley Parkway and westbound at Interstate 840.
