Police: Murfreesboro man killed in car wreck; father arrested for DUI, vehicular homicide

A 33-year-old Murfreesboro man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday evening, Nov. 3 in a van driven by his father.

Bryan Frederich Downing Jr., 33, of Murfreesboro, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash around 5 p.m. Nov. 3 near 1002 E. Northfield Blvd.

The crash involved a 2005 Honda Odyssey. The investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling westbound on Northfield Boulevard. and struck the curb multiple times before leaving the roadway and striking a fire hydrant causing it to roll onto its side.

The crash resulted in both occupants being trapped in the vehicle. Both occupants were extricated by Murfreesboro Fire Rescue personnel.

The driver and father of the victim, Bryan Keith Downing (pictured here), 59, of Murfreesboro, had minor injuries. He was treated on scene by Rutherford County Emergency Services and transported him to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

Upon release from treatment, he was taken into custody and charged with vehicular homicide, Driving Under the Influence, 3rd Offense and Violation of the Open Container Law. He is currently being held at the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department under $264,000 bond.
