When I met Billie Jo Jones earlier this year at CRS, I learned that she would be on a TV show and that her sophomore album would be released this fall. I promised her I would do a full feature on her when the album came out.
Billie Jo Jones is from Texas and was born to a mother who had and still has an addiction, so her grandparents raised her. Because they raised her, she grew up listening to all the great country singers like Ray Price, Tammy Wynette, and Patsy Cline.

She recalled, "I would make them sit in the living room and they'd have to clap and cheer for me while I performed. I went from singing for them in the living room to singing at church and the local Oprys and then putting miles and miles on cars going everywhere around the world while I was growing up." She was a weekend warrior, playing shows all over Texas.
But during her journey, she also had four kids whom she has raised alongside her best friend, who babysits when Jones is on the road. She shared, "I have an amazing support system, and that's how I get to do what I do. I don't have to worry about a thing if I am gone for a few days or even a few weeks."
Just talking to her, Jones reminded me so much of Miranda Lambert. She agreed, "They say I'm a mix between Miranda Lambert and Dolly Parton, which I will take both of those any day." Lambert is from Wendell, Texas, which is 30 minutes from Jones' hometown.
Jones' singles from her first album, "Whose Tequila Are You Drinking?" and "Some Girls Don't Cry," firmly placed her in the country music landscape.
Most recently, Jones is known for being a contestant on CBS's The Road, a show produced by Taylor Sheridan and Blake Shelton, hosted by Keith Urban and Gretchen Wilson. "It was unreal to be picked to be one of the twelve that would represent the first season. Getting to be there, to have that experience, and to learn from icons like Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, and Gretchen Wilson - I really got to know her well. And Taylor Sheridan —my goodness, everything he does is incredible. Everything he touches turns to gold."
On Sunday, October 19th, the world was introduced to Billie Jo Jones and the other 11 contestants. One thing that surprised me was that at least five of the contestants are parents, three of whom are female. "People think that us females, if you're a mom, you shouldn't chase your dreams. But Loretta Lynn had six kiddos, and she is the queen of country music," Jones reminded.
Jones has been playing with her band for the past 12 years and is now on national television. It was vital for her to show her kids that she never gave up. "You can still be a really good mother and pursue your dream. It's a good example for your kids to work hard," she stated.
Now the singer/songwriter has released her sophomore album, Turquoise and Silver, which reflects the woman she has become. Jones is a writer or co-writer on 10 of the 12 songs.
The title track, "Turquoise and Silver," was the last song they wrote for the album, which gives a glimpse into Jones' life as it proclaims, "I'm more than a little bit off kilter, but you can dress it up with turquoise and silver." It explores themes of resilience, individuality, and self-expression.
The song "Flame" is an anthem for anyone who has encountered a girl trying to steal their man. She compares the other girl to a spark while she herself is the "whole damn flame."
The third song released before the rest of the album was "Marilyn." "Marilyn" is equal parts romance and nostalgia, telling the story of a long-awaited date night where classic Hollywood romance meets modern-day country sparkle.
Three upbeat songs you won't want to miss include the sassy "Find A Better Man," the Texas honky tonker, "Tequila Hittin' Me Harder," and the relatable "Oh We Owe" as in "Oh we owe so much money, what's another night of drinkin' going to do?"
But Jones gets sentimental with the song "Forever." She wants to know if he has learned from the past; then he will take forever to show her.
But the most important song on the record may be the honest, heartfelt "End of Me." She reminds herself that the end of us won't be the end of me. The song is exquisite with a message that needs reiterating.
As a single mother of four, few country musicians work harder than Billie Jo Jones. I admire her fearlessness and confidence as she makes zero excuses for pursuing her dream. She is the perfect combination of sweetness and spice. And now the rest of the world is finding out how delightful and talented this Texas troubadour is.
