I have long been a fan of Taylor Hughes since I first interviewed her in 2021.

Her rich contralto adds a unique depth to her songs, making them resonate with listeners who enjoy the blend of truth and grit, all with an authentic Southern drawl.

With her newest single, “Old Fashioned You,” she compares her past loves to drink orders from a bar. She played the song live, and the fans kept requesting that she officially cut it so they could stream it. Girls especially relate to the song as they describe the types of guys they have dated in the context of a drink.

But when she finds the one, she states, None of them got me buzzin’ like you do/ Something about your lovin’ goes down smooth/ Tasted it all, but I always come back to old fashioned you.

Written alongside her pal, Krystal King, they were thinking, “How fun would it be to write a song comparing the different types of men we've dated to different types of drinks? Every guy has their go-to drink, and then you associate that type of person with that drink. We thought it would be fun to take different well-known drinks like Sex-On-The-Beach or just a Gentlemen Jack.”

Hughes continued, “The song is about reminiscing about past relationships that didn't work and why you always keep returning to that simple, classic kind of love. And being from Kentucky, I love to draw on my Kentucky and bourbon roots. That's why we thought of that old-fashioned cocktail. It is one of the oldest cocktails in the book and is a simple classic drink. It’s a good comparison to the type of guy you want: someone without much drama. He is simple, and he is a classy guy. He cleans up well, but he's not over the top.”

The song aptly describes her husband, Andrew, and the couple are expecting their first child in July. And while her previous hit singles, “Good Taste” (as in “I blame my good taste in music to my bad taste in men,”) “Praying to the Whiskey,” and “High On Something,” she won’t be imbibing on on her beloved Kentucky bourbon for a few months. Still, she will continue to tour/sing about the golden elixir as long as it is safe to do so.
