First COVID-19 case confirmed in Rutherford County

The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed additional cases of COVID-19, including one in Rutherford County, bringing the state’s total number of confirmed cases to 26.

After the announcement, Rutherford County Schools announced it was closing for one week, starting March 16. 

We have an important update for you regarding our plan for coronavirus, otherwise known as COVID-19.

We were notified this afternoon at 2 p.m. of a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Rutherford County. We have been told it is an adult but we do not know yet if the individual has connections to any of our schools. We expect to learn more soon.

However, Director of Schools Bill Spurlock has announced a plan to close all Rutherford County schools for one week beginning Monday, March 16. Again, all schools and school-related activities will be closed for one week beginning, Monday, March 16. All field trips and sporting events involving our students or facilities will be put on hold and rescheduled, if possible. 

During that time, school employees will remain at home while our district maintenance and custodial staff deep cleans all school buildings.

We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation as it evolves in Tennessee, and if any other schedule changes become necessary, we will keep parents and employees informed.

The City of Murfreesboro has also canceled:

• In-person court proceedings from close of business through Tuesday, March 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cases are being rescheduled. The Court Clerk’s Office will remain open. Please call the Clerk’s office at 615-890-2142.

• Opening receptions for the Roots Youth Art Exhibition at Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center have been postponed until April, dates to be determined. The receptions, scheduled for Saturday, March 14 for K-5th grades and Saturday, March 21, for 6th-12th grades, include over 500 pieces of artwork from Rutherford County school youth.

• St. Clair Street Senior Center St. Patrick’s Day Dance scheduled for March 14.

• Murfreesboro Soccer Club--All soccer activities are suspended through March 22.

• Through April 3, all Murfreesboro City Schools after school and weekend activities are being cancelled.  ESP will continue on its normal schedule.
