A father and his daughter were able to safely get out of their burning home after a fire in a converted garage quickly spread Thursday morning, Jan. 2, according to a news release from the Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Department.
No injuries were reported.
The preliminary investigation revealed the father was in his home office working when he smelled smoke. The man opened the door to the converted garage, used as a den, and saw the fire. He was able to awake his daughter. Both were able to flee the home located in the 2300 block of Centertree Drive.
Crew members aboard Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) Ladder 9 were first on scene and spotted heavy smoke and fire coming home around 10:48 a.m. Ladder 1, Ladder 10, Safety Rescue 9, Battalion Chief 1 and 2 also responded. Firefighters began an aggressive attack on the fire in the garage and the attic. The home sustained major fire and smoke damage.
Murfreesboro Electric Department workers shut off electricity to the home, which is inhabitable.
The Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene and is assisting the homeowners.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway by MFRD's Fire Marshal's office.
