A Lifetime of Motherhood
~ by Paulette Jackson

They came into this world
two tiny bundles of joy
Each in a different package
One a little girl
And the other a little boy

At first sight we wept
hearing the welcome sound
of our babies’ birthing cry
announcing the arrival
 of their precious little lives
 And we were overwhelmed
full of love and pride

We gave them names
the best we knew
A bestowal of honor
the meaning of heritage
 a remembrance of life
belonging to these two

Our son received his father’s name
a gift of goodness
faithful and true
  a legacy
born in the south
Where roots are planted in the soul
Blue eyes. Blonde hair.
His father’s image
and a love beyond compare

From the beginning
he was the delight of his mother’s eye
Soul mates and play dates
Mamma Bear and her beloved “Sugar Bear”

Our little girl received the name
  “Victorious Gift”
 an unexpected and early birth
A beautiful little rose
With tiny fingers and toes
A welcomed cry
her breath of life
a song of praise
that split the dark
 and shined the light

A vision of hope
our daughter
 little “Sweet-Pea”
her grand-mother’s inheritance
her only grand-daughter to see
just before she left this life
to shout the joy on Heaven’s streets
about her grandson and new baby girl
she got to meet

Our children
they grew so fast
No matter how we tried
each day was a reminder
of childhood past

“Lay down wis’ you?”
“Will you play wis’ me?”
“Nite, night, Mommy. Sleep tight.”
“Do I look pretty?”
“Mom, I don’t wanna grow up.”

Conversations beyond compare
The ones I still love to hear
My children and their voices
 replaying in memory
Timeless togetherness that was
 and is now not here

Yet a favorite place
I visit frequently
young motherhood past

Like Alice, in the fairy tale,
through the looking glass
I go

to a treasure vast
full of diamonds and gold
the richest memories

 that lifetimes last

With gratitude for the joy of being a mom.
