A lightning strike during storms Thursday, June 28 caused a Murfreesboro home to catch fire, Fire Marshal Carl Peas said.

It was a little after noon when crews from the Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department responded to a house fire located at 2727 Comer Drive in Murfreesboro.

Acting Battalion Chief Blake Insell said the homeowners said they were in the house and heard and felt a loud boom. They went outside and that’s when they spotted smoke. They made sure all kids and animals were out of the house and called 911.

Initial crews arrived on scene and saw light smoke exiting the roof. When secondary crews showed up, the smoke got heavier and heavier.

Crews located the fire in the attic area behind a knee wall. Insell said it was hard to access, but firefighters did an excellent job extinguishing the flames and containing the fire damage to the attic and bonus room area (located above the garage).

The lower level of the home received some smoke and water damage but fortunately was able to be mostly salvaged. Five residents will be displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
