Season 17 winner of NBC’s The Voice, Jake Hoot, has teamed up with Music Spotlight artist Becca Bowen to bring us Bowen’s original single, “Sometimes I Do.”
Becca Bowen met Jake Hoot last year when the pair starred in the faith-based musical Theophany. Based on a true story, Theophany reflects their own beliefs in faith, family, and miracles. What was a bit unexpected was how well their voices blended on several duets from the musical.
Bowen, an avid singer/songwriter and performer, had the idea for the song “Sometimes I Do,” which explores the lingering feelings of a lost love and the struggle to fully move on. She teamed up with her longtime producer, Sal Oliveri, to bring the song to life. Its universal theme of heartbreak and unresolved emotions is relatable to nearly everyone.
She explained, “A lot of people do have regrets of a love that they didn't want to let go of, but they did. Everybody deals with a lot of heartbreak. I thought this would be a perfect song for me and Jake to do. I was very nervous to send it to Jake because Jake is incredible and he is the winner of season 17 of The Voice, so it was a little intimidating.”
Bowen had Hoot in mind when she wrote the song, but wasn’t sure how he would react.
He stated, “The first time Becca let me hear 'Sometimes I Do,' I instantly fell in love with it. The writing, the melody—everything about the song just felt right.” I’m incredibly honored to be duetting it with a true vocal powerhouse like Becca, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!”
Many listeners will relate to the words: Do you still reach for me in the dark? / Think about calling/ Don't know where to start." Swear you moved on most of the time, / But you can't get us out of your mind / Sometimes I do, which captures the essence of yearning for a love that remains despite time and distance.
For those not familiar with Jake Hoot, he is a storyteller with a six-string and a purpose. Best known as the Season 17 winner of NBC’s The Voice, Jake has graced iconic stages such as the Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman Auditorium, captivating audiences with his rich, soulful voice and undeniable gift for storytelling. The devoted husband and proud dad of three daughters lives out the same love and values he shares through his music.
Bowen concurred, “It’s such a powerful song, and he has this amazing range, and not just anybody can do this kind of song. I was thinking to myself, “Gosh, if he turns this down, I don't know who I'm going to get, who can sing this song with me."
She continued, “I’ve sung with other people, and you don’t always blend with each other. When we sang in Theophany, there was just something special about it. We truly have an on-stage chemistry that is rare.”

In conclusion, Bowen stated, “’Sometimes I Do’ has that 90s feel like a Faith Hill and Tim McGraw duet. There is nothing like when your vision comes to life, from a piece of paper to the vocals and full production. This really is a hit, and I am blessed to get the opportunity to sing with Jake.”
