The public is invited to the second annual Triumph Award ceremony honoring Rutherford County heroes at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29 at Patterson Park Community Center. Patterson Park is celebrating Black History Month by recognizing the local and national accomplishments within the African American community.
The Triumph Award honors Rutherford County heroes for their boldness in the community. The honor is then awarded to a new generation of leaders.
“Our goal is to bridge a connection between generations of greatness,” said Crystal Ellis-McFerrin, Program Coordinator at Patterson Park.
Patterson Park received many outstanding nominations from local schools and churches. The Patterson Park youth will be giving speeches about the honorees to showcase their talent.
Each award category will have several recipients. The awards that will be presented are:

Robert James Excellence in Athletics Award (Grades 6-12) recognizes the ability to balance sports and everyday life accomplishments. This award also identifies athletes that excel in upholding the values of good sportsmanship and fair play (both on and off the field).

Barbara and Leroy Hodges Artist of the Year Award (All ages) recognizes the individuals that demonstrate unique vision, creativity, and innovation in painting, music, poetry, architecture, sculpting, dance/performance, and cinema. This award also identifies the community contributions to culture, vibrancy and art.

Mary Watkins Achievement Award (All ages) acknowledges the people who exemplify outstanding improvement and development. This award encourages and rewards individuals who work hard when faced with disabilities.

Jeanette McKinley-Bowen Superiority in Academics (Grades 6-12) honors academic effort and success, superior performance in the classroom, positive attitude, high motivation and integrity all while maintaining the respect of their peers.

Florence Smith and Katie Wilson Trailblazer Award (All ages) is presented to individuals or organizations whose contributions and civic accomplishments have positively affected the community and paved the way for future generations.
Patterson Park will also recognize Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for their long-standing partnership and their many philanthropic activities.
A reception will be held following the Triumph Awards presentation.
